Franz Kempf is an artist whose work presents both a striking continuity throughout a career which has stretched over half a century, and he is an artist whose work presents evidence for constant rejuvenation and reinvention. As a humanist, the concern for man lies at the centre of his universe and the dilemma of being is the central preoccupation. However, the human presence in Kempf’s art is not something which is treated as unproblematic, something to be recorded and to be described literally. For Kempf to be human is something to be celebrated and the artist adopts an ethical stance in his defence of human dignity.

Professor Sasha Grishin, AM, FAHA, Art History, Australian National University

FELTspace custom CMS was built to accommodate an art gallery that needs to regularly update shows, exhibitions, and projects.

In order to improve workflow, and lessen the time spent on updating, the FELTspace CMS is time sensitive. Being time sensitive means that when the administrator posts an exhibition, they enter in the day that the exhibition begins, and the day it ends, and the content management system takes care of the rest. This means that the administrator can upload exhibition information in advance, and the website will automatically add it to the Upcoming Exhibition section, then to the Current Exhibition section, and lastly into the Past Exhibition section, depending on dates that the exhibition runs for.

As well as the features created specifically for this particular CMS, necessary functions such as secure logins, and password recovery systems are included, and the entire CMS is mobile friendly.

What is Responsive Design?

Responsive design is a website design principal that deals with displaying one website on multiple devices. The idea is to design a fluid website that can respond to the size of the device that the website is being viewed on. Columns and rows are shuffled around to suit the type of device, resulting in a pleasing browsing experience.

Why Responsive Design?

More and more people are accessing the Internet via mobile devices. As of October 2014 approximately 36.8% of all Internet traffic came from either a mobile (30.1%) or tablet (6.7%) device. The same time last year this figure was 23.3%, and the share of mobile and tablet users is expected to overtake desktop users in the coming years. If your website is unable to display well on devices of different sizes, then you are cutting yourself off from an ever growing group of users. Thankfully responsive design principals can help.

How does Responsive Design Work?

Below is a visual representation of how responsive design works. To the left you can see how the layout of the website would display on a full sized desktop monitor. As the devices get smaller, notice how the layout changes. The columns become rearranged in order to better fit the size and orientation of the screen.

What is Custom Development?

Custom development is a term used to describe the development of a dynamic website, based on the customers specific requirements. Custom web development can take on many forms, and is only really limited by your imagination. Some examples include:

  • Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • eCommerce Websites
  • Online Booking Systems
  • Social Media Platforms
  • Online Invoicing Systems
  • General Web Applications

What is a Dynamic Website?

Websites can be categorised in two ways, static, and dynamic. A static website is what it sounds like, a straight forward non changing website. These websites are a place to anchor information for customers, but are fast becoming dated because of their lack of user interaction. A dynamic website is a website that has the ability to change depending on the user or admin's input. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, and online shops like Amazon are examples of dynamic websites: a user can login, the website will connect to a database, retrieve information associated with the users account, and display a set of information that is unique to them.

Content Management System (CMS)

What is CMS?

CMS stands for Content Management System, and is a term used to describe the system used to update a website. If you want to be able to update your website yourself, but you don't have any web design know-how, then you need a CMS. After the CMS is installed, the owner of the website, or web master can login to the admin page and perform tasks, such as: updating information, uploading new images, editing existing web pages, creating new web pages, or making blog posts.

There are many existing CMSs to choose from, most notably, WordPress, Joomla!, and Drupal. The benefits of using an existing CMS is that it is quick to implement, they include many features, and there are large communities of users that can help you use the systems. One of the downfalls of these systems is that they can be daunting to use, if you haven't used any CMS before, or if you aren't technically savvy.

Custom CMS Explained

If you aren't technically minded, or if you don't have the time to learn how to use a fully fledged CMS, a custom built CMS may be what you need. When building a custom CMS, we take the needs and requirements of the client as the bases of the CMS, so that we can build a system that improves workflow, is more straight forward to use, and cuts the time needed to make updates.

The Importance of Brand Development

When developing a brand there's an ever increasing importance to have an active online presence, and there are more platforms to do this than ever before. Social media is often the first place for starting businesses to go, but how do you reach outside of your social circle to expose your product or service to a broader customer base?

This is where SEO, SEM, and SMO comes in.

What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, and is the practice of optimising the code and content of a website in order for search engines rank and categorize a website, ultimately connecting users to the type of website they are searching for.

When undertaking an SEO campaigns, we work closely with clients to find out the most effective way to connect businesses with customers. This includes researching the amount of competition and traffic certain keywords generate, and using the data gathered by keyword researching to inform us how to proceed with copywriting, information architecture, and viral marketing.

What is SMO?

SMO stands for Social Media Optimisation, and has the same goal as SEO, but in this case using social media platforms rather than search engines.

In order to gain exposure, social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, or blogs are utilised. Using these services gives an opportunity for businesses to interact directly with customers, and vice versa. The process of optimising a website for social media includes adding sharing buttons, such as Facebook Like buttons, or Tweet buttons. In some cases adding a blog section to a website can be a useful tool, not only does a blog increase user interactivity, but a regularly updated blog increases keywords that can help improve search engine rankings.

What is SEM?

SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing, and is related to the purchasing of advertisement space, provided by search engines.

The most popular, and widest reaching search engine advertising service is Google's AdWords. With AdWords, there are two main streams of advertising, Pay Per Click (PPC), and Cost Per Mille (CPM). With PPC, you pay each time a user clicks on your AdWords link, and with CPM, you pay for every thousand impressions. An SEM campaign would include a combination of both PPC, and CPM.

About Award Designs

Award Designs was founded in 2012 as the result of a realisation - I wanted to make a living by working on something that I enjoy doing. Ever since I was a kid, I always knew I wanted to work with computers in one way or another. My first taste of coding was in the early 90s, using a Commodore 64, and a limited knowledge of BASIC, I was able to repeat words or phrases endlessly by creating loops, and after more practice, I was able to advance my skills to create animations, and presentations.

After my family getting an internet connection in the mid 90s, I became aware of the possibilities that the internet could provide. I could chat to people from around the word, play online games, and download (very slowly on a dial up modem) cartoons. I wanted to make my mark on the internet, and so in the early 2000s, with a fresh copy of Macromedia Dreamweaver, and my very first digital camera, I created AdelaideArt.com, my first foray into website design (minus a best forgotten GeoCities website about "fast cars").

After numerous projects, completing my degree, and working for other companies, I gained the knowledge, experience, and skill that enabled me to start my own agency.
